A change of seasons is the perfect time to rethink old food habits, make healthy food swaps, and get a fresh start.

Winter seems to be particularly hard on everyone's diets - think cozy pajamas, lots of Netflix, and fancy cheese boards. With warmer weather and longer, sunnier days on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to check back in with high-energy, feel-good foods! Feeling organized with your diet makes you feel empowered in everything you do and gives you the energy to tackle each day’s to-do list.

Cut back on the things you know you should: There’s a long list of things we all know we should ditch - but making a lot of changes at once can feel overwhelming. Replace one processed with a whole foods snack, daily. Rather than a granola bar, grab an apple. Instead of cheese puffs, snag a string of cheese. Pass on prepared foods with long lists of ingredients that load you up with sugars, salts and unhealthy trans fat, and make room for more healthy, whole foods instead.
Eat more at home: Sure, takeout is easy and convenient during busy weeks, but it wreaks havoc on your wallet and health goals…Do you really know what is in the food you’re eating when you don’t cook it? Skip dining out and save the calories, sodium and money. Use fresh ingredients and boost flavor with herbs and spices, rather than salt and butter.
Prep your meals in advance: Mom life, student life, work life (or some combination of all three) makes life so busy. After a long day, the last thing you feel like doing is making dinner for tonight and lunch for tomorrow! Prepping even some of your meals during the weekend can save you a lot of time and money, and is absolutely foolproof if you want to eat healthier, more well-balanced meals.

Bad Habits Make Every Day Groundhog Day
Bad Habits Make Every Day Groundhog Day

Why are bad habits so much easier to keep around than good ones? Our brains like to feel comfortable and safe - and bad habits can feel like a cozy (but bad for us!) blanket. Whether consciously acted on or not, we love the dopamine rush of a fulfilled bad habit craving. When we try to change our brains, they steer us back to what we know - the habits we want to break.
